Paint and varnish, Solvents



Paint and varnish industry includes two big subsections:

  1. Paint and varnish production;
  2. Coloring, paint and other coating application

1. In paint and varnish production (manufacturing) almost at all plants used similar technologies: mixing of builder, pigment, solvent and special additives. While operating procedure on a different production areas harmful fumes and gaseous substances emission is occur. For example:

  • Dust. Produced while pigment is charging;
  • Organic substances (processing aids) fumes and gases;
  • Solvents fumes. Discharging, batching, mixing, packing emission;

Most harmful and hard-to-remove in this list of pollutions are different solvents fumes. In paint and varnish industry concentration of solvents in ventilating emissions reach 4000mg/m3 of air!

Here is not full list of substances used in paint and varnish industry which pollute air on a working area.

Some of these substances are extremely poisonous and must be cleaned.

Sterol irritates eyes, skin and respiratory tracts. Swallowing of liquid or inhalation of fumes can cause aspiration in lungs with risk of chemical pneumonia. Influence can cause loss of consciousness. Repeated or continuous contact with skin can cause dermatitis and sensitizing of skin. Repeated or continuous contact can cause asthma. Substance influences to central nervous system. Substance influences to central nervous system.

Solvents fumes can be removed from a working zone and fabrication facilities using exhaust ventilation and release into the atmosphere. But in that case two main difficulties appear:

  • Necessity to heat and fan incoming air in rooms
  • Government limitation to release of harmful substances into atmosphere

So many item manufacturers faced with the task to clean ventilating emissions and working area air from solvents fumes.

Now available several technologies of cleaning air from sterol: absorbing (activated carbon), scrubbers (liquid absorption), biological cleaning, reburning, catalytic, photocatalytic and gas-discharge-catalytic. All these technologies have positive and negative sides.

2. Use of paints and varnish for industrial deposition and cleaning of air from solvents fumes and other pollutions has quite a number of features connected with applied coloring techniques and types of used materials. There are various types of coatings, which differ in coloring technique and types of paintwork materials. In every case there are different types of working area air pollutions, technological ventilating emissions and air ducts.

2.1. Polymeric (powder) coating – polyester, epoxy polyester, epoxy. Spreading to the item by electrostatic method like dry powder. Coating formation occurs in a special oven at the temperature of 150-180C degrees.

Pollutions: paint powder, gaseous decomposition products of paint while paint powder melts in oven, fumes of solvent which is used in preparing items surface to painting.

2.2. Two-component precoats and paints – baking after mixing of components. Most breakthrough technology of two-component coatings deposition is dispersion and mixing of components directly “in stream” just before it reach a surface.

Pollutions: paint and varnish aerosol, solvents and paint components fumes. Also at inside wall of air ducts and fan propellers extensive deposition of paint aerosol is occur.

2.3. Ultraviolet precoats and paints – polymerize after ultraviolet irradiation. Dispersing technique – dispersion on a surface and placing to ultraviolet irradiation area for a time.

Pollutions: paint and varnish aerosol, solvents and paint components fumes. Also at inside wall of air ducts and fan propellers extensive deposition of paint aerosol is occur.

2.4.“Conventional coatings” – nitro paints, nitrodopes and precoats, “oil” colors, varnishes and precoats. Different volatile and low-volatile compositions. Dispersing technique – various, from brushing – up to dispersion at automatic flow line.

Pollutions: paint and varnish aerosol, solvents and paint components fumes. Also at inside wall of air ducts and fan propellers extensive deposition of paint aerosol is occur.

Any paints, precoats and varnishes dispersing are done in a special painting chamber, equipped by combined extract and input ventilation. When drawing from such chambers is organized cleaning of air from powder, paint aerosols, harmful gases and solvents fumes need to be provided.
