Rubber utilization

Modern world and techniques can not be imagined without different rubber made goods. From condoms up to conveyer belt and tire cases. But nothing is eternal and becomes faulty and need to be utilized. Nowadays big amount of rubber made goods are already piled up on a different junkyards, special mortuaries, storage areas, etc. All of this rubber waits being used again. Used rubber treatment process is sufficiently difficult. One step of rubber treatment process is rubber devulcanization. While this process three-dimensional structure of rubber and rubber crumb generation is occur. Than this feedstock can be used in new goods: road carpet, filling compound, etc.

In rubber utilization process general ventilating emissions and working area air pollution types are:

  • Rubber dust. Generated while devulcanization process.
  • Plasticizer and other processing aids fumes and aerosols.
  • toluene
  • sterol
  • bivinyl
  • isoprene
  • Other

Most harmful and hard-to-remove in this list of pollutions are plasticizer and other processing aids fumes and aerosols.
Concentration of these substances in ventilating emissions reaches 2000mg/m3 of air.

Sterol irritates eyes, skin and respiratory tracts. Swallowing of liquid or inhalation of fumes can cause aspiration in lungs with risk of chemical pneumonia. Influence can cause loss of consciousness. Repeated or continuous contact with skin can cause dermatitis and sensitizing of skin. Repeated or continuous contact can cause asthma. Substance influences to central nervous system. Substance is carcinogenic for human. 

Sterol monomer and solvents fumes can be removed from a working zone and fabrication facilities using exhaust ventilation and release into the atmosphere. But in that case two main difficulties appear:

  • Necessity to heat and fan incoming air in rooms.
  • Government limitation to release of harmful substances into atmosphere.

So many item manufacturers faced with the task to clean ventilating emissions and working area air from sterol monomer and solvents fumes.
Now available several technologies of cleaning air from sterol: absorbing (activated carbon), scrubbers (liquid absorption), biological cleaning, reburning, catalytic, photocatalytic and gas-discharge-catalytic. All these technologies have positive and negative sides.
